UNM men's golf wraps NCAA Championship tied for 25th
The New Mexico men's golf team ended its' time at the 2023 NCAA Championship on Sunday afternoon finishing tied for 25th in the 30-team field. The Lobos needed to be one of the top 15 teams to advance to Monday's final round of stroke play. UNM shot 11-over par during the third round, shooting 40-over total thru 54 holes.Despite the team outcome, junior Matthew Watkins punched his ticket to Monday's final round of stroke play. He qualified as one of the nine best individuals from non-advancing teams. Watkins is currently tied for 19th and aims to become the first Lobo since 1996 to finish in the top 20 at the NCAA Championship.Head coach Glen Millican spoke after the final round on Sunday on his optimism towards next season."This was a big step to get to this point this year," Millican said. "For them to get to regionals the way they did...this team was ranked in the mid-60s at the end of the fall, to climb all the way there to the mid-40s and then advance on to this stage was great. What they can take from this - there's no hypotheticals now. Next season when we're preparing for our regular season events, and also in the back of our mind wanting to be prepared for this, it's not something that we have to talk about like 'it might be like this' or try to explain it to them. They know what it's like."Brandon Schong is the only Lobo out of the six golfers who competed at the NCAA Championship this past weekend who will not return in the fall.
