New video released by the Hobbs Police Department show the moments an officer was shot and injured during an incident on February 23.
One person died after a shootout with a Hobbs police officer, officials said February 23. It was during that shootout when a Hobbs Police Officer While officers were giving first aid to the person and the injured officer, a woman who was handcuffed stole a police vehicle.
A release from the Hobbs Police Department said an officer spotted what looked like a stranded vehicle in the 1900 block of North Turner Street. There, the officer approached a person who then tried running away. A shootout ensued.
Officers tried giving first aid to the person, but he died of his injuries after being transported to a hospital, police said. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old Hobbs woman who was detained and in handcuffs managed to steal a patrol vehicle while officers were trying to give first aid to the person involved in the gun battle.
Police said the woman, identified as Janessa Perez, crashed shortly after and ran away on foot. She is still on the run, and people are being asked not to approach her and to call police if she is spotted.
The officer who was in the shootout was injured and transported to Covenant Hospital in Hobbs, police said.
Police said New Mexico State Police are now investigating. People are asked to stay clear of North Turner Road from Blanco to Grimes while they investigate.
There is no threat to the public, police said.
